Heard about yoga and want to give it a try? Perhaps you are intrigued because various celebrities are doing yoga. Perhaps the mystery of it captures your
imagination. Maybe you've seen yoga on television or on video or know a friend who does yoga.
Or maybe you know about the calming effects on your mind or the benefits to your body or its healing effects - relieving back pain and keeping those advancing years at bay! Whatever the reason, you owe it to yourself to gain a sound foundation of the basics of yoga so that you can then continue on your path of yoga through home practice or through a regular class armed with the basic skills and knowledge. You do not have to be fit to embark on a yoga course, although if you have a medical condition or are older and have not done any significant physical work before, you should check with your health professional to see if they advise you that starting the course is OK or to take any precautions. Yoga can be practised from any state of ability through appropriate modifications. Clearly there will be some things that you may never be able to do, even for the fittest or most flexible person, but that does not mean you cannot derive considerable benefit from the practice of yoga. Yoga is for you.
The Course
The course will take you through the basics of yoga practice with an emphasis on actual practice using the breath and freeing up your joints. You will learn to relax in
a way that you never thought possible and be able to calm your emotions through simple breathing techniques. During the course you will learn yoga positions that you can take away and practice yourself.
Don't forget, this is your first step on your path of yoga for life. You will not be a 'perfect' yogi after the course, but you will be able to pursue your own development at your own pace in your own way. You will not regret the decision to join the course!
Hatha Yoga
Hatha yoga means 'union' and it works towards the union of the body with the mind and with your spirit.
Yoga is a spiritual practice, but hatha yoga works mainly on the physical body. Yoga is compatible with all religions or none at all, despite what you may have heard in the past, even though it has its roots in Hinduism. This course will set you off on the yoga path, but there is no one 'correct' path - you make your own path, and one based on hatha yoga is an excellent starting point. At the end of the day, though, you go as far as you want - it is your choice. You don't 'have' to do anything or join any organisation. You decide whatever feels right for you. So be brave and take the first step into the unknown. Don't be bashful or afraid that you will lose yourself. There is nothing sinister - just give yourself permission to give it a go, and suspend judgement - let yourself feel the benefits of your practice.

What You Need
You need to wear loose comfortable clothing to your yoga lessons. For relaxation, you will need some warmer clothing and/or a blanket. It is best to practice on a special 'sticky' mat, but
otherwise a non-slip mat with a little 'give' in it can be used.
You will need one to do your home practice with anyway. Your own block is recommended, as well as a belt. Initially, you can use a cushion and an old tie. Please let me know if you want to buy these items and I can bring them to class when you first start.
