The use of vibration within yoga is called mantra.
The most fundamental mantra that exists is ‘Om’ and this represents the fundamental sound of the universe. There are many mantras, some of which are longer verses which can be chanted, and this can become Japa Yoga. Whilst the classic mantras are of Indian origin and often relate to Hindu Gods, it is believed that it is the sound itself rather than its meaning that has the beneficial effect. It is possible to use mantra as a form of devotional yoga, and one can use verses that relate to the religion that you believe in rather than Hindu verses. For example there are many verses in the Christian texts that could be chanted for devotional yoga. However, you use mantra whether or not you have a religious belief, and it provides a wonderful feeling of healing and peace.
